Floor Merjenburgh Dutch, b. 1997
Born in Hulshorst in the Netherlands in 1997, Floor Merjenburgh is a Dutch ceramic sculptor and product designer based in Utrecht graduated in 2023. Her practice is driven by material research and by a sustained interest in what happens when control is deliberately reduced. Working primarily with clay, Merjenburgh creates conditions in which gravity, pressure, elasticity and resistance become active forces. The final form is neither fully imposed by the artist nor left entirely to chance. It emerges through negotiation between intention, process and the physical behaviour of the material.
Her series Merged by Gravity established this approach through pairs of clay forms brought together while still supple. Once released from their moulds, the separate elements deform one another through their own weight. The resulting works retain a sense of play and interdependence. Their shape is created by contact: one body leaning, pressing and settling into another. Through this process, Merjenburgh explores how simple physical conditions can produce forms that feel both familiar and unpredictable.
At the centre of Floor Merjenburgh's work is the idea that clay can act as more than a passive medium. She approaches it as a collaborator with its own limits and possibilities. A form may stretch, fold, collapse, resist or settle differently from what was anticipated. Merjenburgh guides these movements without erasing them. Cracks, impressions, compressed areas and shifts in surface remain visible as evidence of the making process. Each sculpture becomes a record of a specific encounter between hand, matter and force.
FORM, deliberate tactility marks a development toward greater scale, density and concentration. In these works, clay is intentionally released and shaped through impact. Gravity compresses the material into tactile, bodily forms, while the moment of contact remains embedded in the surface. The works invite looking, but they also appeal directly to the viewer's sense of touch, weight and physical presence. Glaze adds colour and depth without concealing the traces of deformation beneath it.
Across both series, Floor Merjenburgh investigates authorship, material agency and the productive tension between control and coincidence. Her work has been presented at HKU Exposure, Object Rotterdam, Collectible Brussels, KunstRAI, PAN Amsterdam and recently at CAN Ibiza and Enter Copenhagen.
