CAMILLE POZZO DI BORGO French, b. 1992

Overview

Visual artist, illustrator, and engraver, born in Ajaccio, she lives and works in Paris. Camille Pozzo di Borgo graduated in 2017 and grew up in Ajaccio. There, she developed an early passion for the animal world and nature around her, observing wildlife in all its forms and collecting small animal skeletons. She enrolled at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2012, studying in the studios of Philippe Cognée and then Tim Eitel, graduating in December 2017. Today, her work focuses on animal and human anatomy through the process of intaglio engraving. She dissects her subjects through drawing and intaglio engraving techniques. Different temporalities and different internal and external layers of human or animal bodies are superimposed on a single image. The resulting explosions reveal moments of pure animality. These superimposed gestures bring a new degree of abstraction through the deformation of the beast. From these exotic animals, she invents new chimeras.
Flesh, skin, fur, and textures: Camille engraves surfaces and areas of contact on animal skins, which she then applies to sheets of paper to leave imprints. These imprints are plural, as Camille works by superimposing, overprinting, and bringing together several engravings, like several skins. The images are thus pitted against each other. Sometimes each engraving depicts an animal in motion (a monkey swinging through the canopy, a raptor taking flight); sometimes the engravings depict different animals in conflict. It is as if their forced encounter on the same sheet of paper were to spark hostilities.

Born in 1992 in Ajaccio, graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2017, lives and works in Paris.
